Nautical Terms, Dude

Just some friendly seafaring terms for you to be aware of:

Port = Left
Starboard = Right
Aft = Toward or in the rear (stern) of the ship
Bow = Toward or in the front (fore) of the ship
Berth: Dock, Pier
“Cabin”, not “Room”
“Ship”, not “Boat” (as seen in The West Wing)
“Deck”, not “Floor”
“Voyage”, not “Cruise”
“Cabin Mate”, not “Roommate”
Ship runs on Military Time: 1pm = 1300; 2pm = 1400, etc.

  1. "Residence Hall", not "Dorm"..oh, wait - you're just talking sea stuff ;) Seriously, though - I'm glad you spelled out all those terms. Now, I can throw them around with a bit of confidence if I'm on a boat with friends.
